On March 22, U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced over $1.5 million in funding for New York City and Long Island NeighborWorks America member organizations focused on community development. NHSNYC, a chartered member of NeighborWorks since 1994, was awarded $540,000–the most any NY-based organization received in this funding round. Of this amount, NHSNYC will use $165,000 to support critical education and counseling programs which serve as the path to first-time homeownership for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers. The remaining $375,000 will be used for down payment and closing cost assistance grants and loans for first-time homebuyers and rehabilitation loans for existing homeowners to maintain their homes.
