Building Community: NHSNYC’s First Quarterly Newsletter of 2024

Dear NHSNYC Friends and Supporters,

Greetings, and Happy New Year!

The year 2023 was marked by significant achievements and a steadfast commitment to our mission of empowering disadvantaged low and moderate-income New Yorkers to purchase and preserve affordable housing opportunities. We have faced challenges head-on, adapted to evolving circumstances, and continued to positively impact the lives of those we serve.

Some highlights from 2023 include:

  • rebranding of our annual signature fundraiser—Affordable Housing for All Gala— to the Bridging the Gap Gala, and the incorporation of a robust panel discussion with partners engaged in our work;
  • being named a Goldman Sachs Community Development Champion for the second year in a row;
  • being awarded a $100,000 Grant from New York Community Trust to boost Community Development and Civic Engagement for the second consecutive year.

As you likely know, our mission is grounded in meeting the needs of low-to-moderate-income New Yorkers pursuing homeownership and financial wellness. Issues of affordability and equitable access to financial products are at the core of our work, and as we enter 2024, we renew our dedication to these essential pillars.

Our focus on empowering individuals and families to achieve the dream of homeownership remains unwavering. In the coming year, we aim to expand our efforts, providing educational resources, counseling, and support to guide even more New Yorkers through the path to homeownership.

Affordability is a key driver in our initiatives. In 2024, we will continue exploring innovative solutions to ensure housing remains affordable for low-to-moderate-income individuals. This includes working closely with partners, exploring sustainable housing models, and advocating for policies that prioritize affordability and inclusivity.

Equity lies at the heart of our mission. We are committed to providing equitable access to affordable loans and financial products, addressing the unique needs of those in underserved communities. Our Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) lending programs will play a pivotal role in ensuring that financial resources are accessible to all, regardless of background or economic status.

As we embark on this new year, I want to express my deepest appreciation to our dedicated team, our partners, and all those who support NHSNYC. Your commitment fuels our work and inspires us to continue overcoming obstacles in advancing our mission.

Together, let us continue to build a future where homeownership is attainable, affordability is a reality, and equitable access is not just a goal but a lived experience for every New Yorker.

Wishing you a joyful and prosperous 2024.

In partnership,

Derrick Griggs
