Building Community: Celebrating Financial Capability Month and National Volunteer Month

Dear NHSNYC Friends and Supporters,

Springtime is the season of growth and renewal. In that spirit, it is bittersweet to share with you that I have decided to resign as NHSNYC’s Chief Executive to pursue other opportunities, effective April 30. To ensure a smooth transition and maintain day-to-day operations, I will serve the Board of Directors in an advisory capacity through July 2024, when a new leader is anticipated to be identified and announced. The press release, linked below, provides more details about the upcoming transition.

I’d like to thank NHSNYC’s Staff and Board for their commitment to our mission and service to our clients. Their work is critical to the stability of our neighborhoods, and their dedication to our clients truly makes a difference in building stronger communities through sustainable homeownership and increased financial capability. I know they will continue to impact our shared community through their meaningful work. I look forward to seeing how this storied organization will continue to flourish in its next chapter.

The month of April marks the celebration of two significant observances: Financial Capability Month and National Volunteer Month.

At NHSNYC, we recognize the paramount importance of financial literacy in empowering individuals and families to achieve their financial goals and secure their futures. Throughout Financial Capability Month, we are committed to providing our community with impactful educational opportunities and resources, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate their financial journeys successfully.

However, none of this would be possible without the invaluable contributions of our dedicated volunteers. As we honor National Volunteer Month, we extend our deepest gratitude to our volunteer presenters who generously give their time, expertise, and passion to teach our financial empowerment and homebuyer education classes. Their commitment is pivotal in advancing our mission of promoting homeownership, financial stability, and economic empowerment for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers.

As we embark on this month of celebration and reflection, I invite you to join us in honoring the vital role of financial literacy and volunteerism in transforming lives and strengthening communities. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

It has been my honor and pleasure to lead this organization since September 2020. From emerging from the pandemic to navigating inflation and the recent interest rate hikes, we have continued to move the needle on making the dream of lasting homeownership a reality for New Yorkers across all income levels.

Thank you for engaging with us in this work and helping us fulfill our mission.

In partnership,

Derrick Griggs

Chief Executive Officer
