Championing Financial Wellness and Board Volunteerism with NHSNYC

April honors two pillars of NHSNYC’s work: Financial Capability Month and National Volunteer Month. To celebrate these aspects of our work, NHSNYC is taking time to shine a spotlight on individuals who are making a tangible difference in the lives of others through their commitment to our mission and shared community. Among these exceptional individuals is Michael P. King (“Mike”), a dedicated board member of Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City (NHSNYC) and Executive Vice President and New York Market President at First Horizon Bank. Through his volunteerism and unwavering support, Mike exemplifies the spirit of giving back and empowering low-to-moderate-income families on their homeownership and financial wellness journeys.

Mike’s journey with NHSNYC began in 2017 with an introduction by then-CEO Susan Ifill. As a seasoned banking professional with a passion for community development, he was invited to participate in NHSNYC’s Loan Policy and Credit Committee (LPCC), which was tasked with reviewing and approving loan applications made to NHSNYC for residents in need of funds to preserve and sustain their homes. Through his work with the LPCC, which he now chairs, Mike recognized the vital role that NHSNYC plays as a nonprofit Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), supporting individuals and families in achieving their dreams of homeownership and financial stability. By enabling access to critically needed capital to repair and maintain their homes, NHSNYC enables low-to-moderate-income New Yorkers to keep equity in the family, grow familial wealth, and pass along generational wealth. It wasn’t long after, in 2019-2020, that a position on NHSNYC’s Board of Directors opened up, and Mike was invited to join the full board, a role he has served ever since.

Since joining the board of NHSNYC nearly four years ago, Mike has brought invaluable insights and expertise to the organization’s strategic initiatives. His wealth of experience in the financial sector has been instrumental in guiding NHSNYC’s programs and services, ensuring they remain relevant and responsive to the community’s evolving needs. In addition to his work with the Board’s Loan Policy and Credit Committee, he also helps oversee and grow the organization through the Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee, tasked with reviewing and maintaining the board’s policies, procedures, and qualifications, as well as sourcing, evaluating, and recommending potential nominees for election to the full Board of Directors.

Mike’s commitment to volunteerism extends beyond his board service at NHSNYC.  A Certified Financial Planner and a Chartered Financial Consultant, he is a current volunteer and has served as a board member for Junior Achievement, an organization that teaches financial literacy to children in schools. His collective experience volunteering with Junior Achievement and now as a Board Member with NHSNYC has fostered his passion for providing access to quality financial education and basic financial literacy for children and young adults.

As we celebrate Financial Capability Month and National Volunteer Month this April, Mike stands out as a shining example of how one individual’s commitment to volunteerism and community service can make a profound difference in the lives of others. Through his leadership, compassion, and dedication to NHSNYC’s mission, Mike is helping to build strong, empowered communities.

NHSNYC is immensely grateful for Mike’s unwavering support and invaluable contributions. We look forward to continuing our partnership in empowering low-to-moderate-income families on their journey to homeownership and financial wellness.
