On Tuesday, October 8, 2024, nearly 250 guests gathered for NHSNYC’s Annual Bridging the Gap Gala to support homeownership and lending programs that empower low-to-moderate-income New Yorkers. The evening began with a vibrant cocktail and dinner reception on the rooftop, where guests connected to celebrate NHSNYC’s work and impact.
The program was led by FOX 5 Good Day NY’s Mike Woods, who served as the Master of Ceremonies. David Bagatelle, President of NHSNYC’s Board of Directors, delivered welcoming remarks, highlighting the organization’s ongoing commitment to affordable homeownership and financial stability across the five boroughs.
Keynote speaker Tonya Ores, NHSNYC’s incoming Chief Executive Officer, shared her vision for the future of the organization, reaffirming its mission to ensure homeownership opportunities remain accessible and sustainable for all New Yorkers, and emphasizing the importance of partnership and collaboration to have a lasting impact and do meaningful work.
A key highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Emerging Partnership Award to Citizens, accepted by Rebecca O’Connell, Regional President and Head of Middle Market Commercial Banking for the NYC Metro Region. The award was presented by Patricia Primo, NHSNYC’s Director of Homeownership, in recognition of Citizens’ growing commitment to NHSNYC’s work, including their support of the Community Resource Fair, Homeownership Center, and Financial Capability Program.
In a heartfelt moment, the Surprise Partnership Award was presented by NHSNYC Homeownership Staff Kisha Montesino and Dolores Pena to Yvon Ponce de Leon, Retail Mortgage Consultant at Ridgewood Savings Bank. Yvon was honored for her exceptional dedication and support to NHSNYC’s mission as volunteer for NHSNYC’s English and Spanish homebuyer education programming.
The evening’s most moving moment was when Regina Smith, a longtime NHSNYC lending client, took the stage to share her story as a lifelong Harlem resident. Introduced by Marita Bankhead, NHSNYC’s Director of Lending Services, Regina shared her personal journey to homeownership and her lasting connection with NHSNYC, having worked with the organization for over 20 years to maintain and improve her Harlem brownstone.
Thanks to the generosity of partners, supporters, and guests, the event raised critical funds to support NHSNYC’s homeownership and lending programs, helping more New Yorkers achieve and sustain affordable homeownership. The evening was full of energy and excitement, celebrating both NHSNYC’s achievements and the invaluable partnerships that continue to make the organization’s work possible.
